Dear Minister Watt,
For 60 million years, against the odds, the iconic Maugean skate has always found a way to survive. It's the classic Aussie battler – having outlasted far more ferocious creatures like the T.rex to become an emblem of resilience and hope.
Now, scientists warn that the Maugean skate’s only population is at serious risk of extinction.
Australia is known globally for its extraordinary wildlife but tragically, it is also infamous for driving the Thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian Tiger, to extinction.
Minister, your government committed to no new extinctions. We cannot allow the skate to become the ‘Thylacine of the sea’.
Currently, the skate is on a life support system, paid for by the Australian public. Meanwhile the primary threat to the skate’s survival, salmon farming, remains in place.
There is hope. Minister Watt, Australia’s peak independent scientific body has provided you with Conservation Advice for the Maugean skate. The advice details the actions needed to restore the skate to healthy population numbers.
Critically, the advice recommended the elimination and/or reduction of salmon biomass in the skate’s last remaining habitat. To date, no actions have been taken to implement this specific recommendation.
The skate’s full recovery hinges on the implementation of all recommendations in the Conservation Advice. Not some, or those less political, but all.
Minister, we implore you to implement the Conservation Advice for the Maugean skate in full and without delay and stand true to your government’s commitment of ‘no new extinctions’.
The skate’s survival is in your hands. Future generations will thank you for going into bat for this Aussie icon and giving it a fighting chance to be cherished for another millennia.
For the Maugean skate,
